By Deborah Eden Tull and Kaira Jewel Lingo, co-hosts of the Mindfulness & Meditation Summit

What if you could touch, right in this moment, the support that you need in order to face these times of upheaval and uncertainty?

What if you could find the strength you need by turning toward the painful emotions of fear, grief, sadness, and frustration... and meeting them with mindfulness, compassion, and kindness?

The energy of mindfulness can be cultivated by each of us, in each moment. The seed is already within us and practice helps us remember our innate capacity for compassion and clear-seeing. Learning to do this in our daily lives is the medicine we need in these times.

We invite you to join us in extraordinary conversations for extraordinary times. In the 28 interviews in the upcoming Mindfulness and Meditation Summit, which we’re privileged to host from May 19-22…

… we will learn that we were made for these times — and that by activating the power of mindfulness within, we can meet this moment with courage, joy, and grace.

Our summit speakers, including Joanna Macy, Pamela Weiss, Suzanne Bryant, Dr. Nitin Ron, Mark Coleman, James Baraz, Ruth King, Amma Thanasanti, La Sarmiento, Dr. Larry Ward, and many more…

… represent the true diversity of leaders in the meditation and mindfulness movement — at a time when we need ALL of our voices represented and ALL of our medicine to cultivate change as a species.

This summit is the meeting point of many edges, people of truly different backgrounds, from different generations, bridging mindfulness practice with the fields of activism, science, cultural restoration, climate justice, wellness/healing, and the arts.

The accessible and ancient practices and tools you’ll receive offer medicine for personal and collective transformation and help us remember the qualities that are already within us: love, resilience, grace, courage, care, and relational intelligence.

In these uncertain times, when many are feeling lonely and wondering how to contribute to positive change, we invite you to come together in conscious community to affirm who we really are and who we can become together. Each one of us has a contribution to make.

You can register for this free summit here. Be prepared to discover restored peace, renewed compassion for yourself and others, and greater tolerance of uncertainty and the unknown.

EDITOR’S NOTE: “The Master Key” by Robert Peng, a featured speaker in The Shift Network’s 2019 Qigong Global Summit, is one of the most profoundly important books I’ve ever read. I can say that it’s life-changing with complete confidence, because it changed my life before I even finished reading it. I was so impressed with this book that we are serializing the section called “One Hundred Days of Darkness and Light” in future issues of Catalyst. You can read the fourteenth installment (as well as the previous ones) here.
— Phil Bolsta

The uplifting stories in this issue’s “The Nicest Thing” section come from Qigong teacher Lee Holden, whose new 7-week live video training, Qigong to Supercharge Your Immune System, begins Thursday, May 21...

… and from Nick Mattos, Shift’s Faculty Recruitment and Engagement Manager, who expresses his gratitude to the many courageous women who stood in their truth at great personal risk. Look for stories from other members of the Shift Team in future issues. We look forward to having you get to know us better!

Relational Mindfulness During Covid-19 and Beyond
By Deborah Eden Tull, co-host of the Mindfulness & Meditation Summit

There are nine principles to Relational Mindfulness, which allow us to embody compassionate awareness in all of our relationships—with the self, one another and the planet, especially now when a global pandemic challenges all of humanity. By practicing these principles, we can remember our inherent interrelatedness and recognize that interconnection is truly our birthright. To read more, click here.

Liberation through Mourning
By Lama Rod Owens, a featured speaker in the Mindfulness & Meditation Summit

I am in mourning. I have been sitting in my house for two months, lonely and longing to see my friends, family, lovers, and to even go to the grocery store or a walk around my block without fearing contacting Covid-19 and enduring a potentially painful illness and/or death. I, like many people, am hurt by the loss of my old life as well as the death of so many people. On top of this, I struggle to figure out how to step into a new world which will be socially, economically, and politically unstable. To read more, click here.

The Fulfillment of Remembrance
By La Sarmiento, a featured speaker in the Mindfulness & Meditation Summit

And recently, there have been more days when I have felt calmer, easeful, spacious, grateful, and even happy. Yet circumstances in the world, as the pandemic progresses, continues to get worse on so many levels. The narrative then shifted to “How dare I feel better!” I had forgotten. I fell off the wagon. I had multiple arrows piercing my heart. And when I remembered to pause long enough to put my hand on my heart with long deep breaths, I told myself, “This, too, buddy, is ok.” multiple times a day when needed. I was able to free myself from the prison of my own making: I remembered to be compassionate towards myself. To read more, click here.

Connection and Discernment: Pathways for Resilience
By Amma Thanasanti, a featured speaker in the Mindfulness & Meditation Summit

We can listen to the news and plug into social media in ways that give us information and we feel more connected. Or we can get stuck absorbing endless facts that leave us anxious and feeling powerless. We can combine the importance of hand washing with 20 seconds of laughter to flush our systems of stress, or we can focus on eradicating germ transmission. We can think about what we can’t get, or we can focus on all that we do have. To read more, click here.

The Worldly Winds of Uncertainty
By Valerie Mason-John, a featured speaker in the Mindfulness & Meditation Summit

And then came the huge storm. Some boats have toppled over; people were rescued, others died. Some people have lost everything in the storm and managed to grab onto a raft to help tide them over for a few months. And others are living on shipwrecks; every bit of income has dried up, with no access to money or food. And then there are people like me who were blown off course, and still have everything we need. Andrew Harvey on Our Global Dark Night
Audio teaching by Shift faculty Andrew Harvey

My dear friends, I am honored and thrilled to be able to talk to you directly, and right from my heart to yours, the truth that is emerging about this devastating time. The only way I believe that you can understand, or begin to understand, the immensity of what is happening to us is to begin to realize that we are living an unprecedented Kali event, a global dark night. This global dark night has now begun with great dramatic ferocity. We are in the furnace of evolutionary transfiguration, and the door of the furnace has been shut.

The Virus Is a Reminder of Something Lost Long Ago
By Alan Lightman
Published in The Atlantic

Habits of mind and lifestyle do not change easily. Without noticing, we slowly slip into the routines of our lives, like becoming so accustomed to living on a noisy street that we cannot remember our previous neighborhood and a time of silence. Some powerful force must strike to awaken us from our slumber. Now we have been struck. We have a chance to notice: We have been living too fast. We have sold our inner selves to the devil of speed, efficiency, money, hyper-connectivity, “progress.” To read more, click here.

Love in the Time of Covid
By Carlyn Montes De Oca, animal-human health expert

My dog Grace is an unending source of inspiration during these unprecedented times. If it weren’t for her, I might still be submerged in one of the stages of grief instead of laughing at her bouncing around the yard, or finding her nose in my armpit every morning, or smiling every time she snores. Because of Grace, Ken and I are connecting even more. Many nights we cuddle on the couch, a big white dog sandwiched between us, watching the sunset over the Sandia Mountains. Laying around and doing absolutely nothing is no small hurdle for two A-type personalities. To read more, click here.

My Journey Inward: The Path to Self-Love
By Mandie Renner

To build something new, you must first tear down the old. This is true with construction of any kind, including inner work. Moving from the belief that “I am not enough,” “I am unlovable,” “I hate myself”… to a belief of “I am enough,” “I am worthy of love,” and “I love myself” is not for the faint of heart. My journey has been, and continues to be, a long, arduous path filled with gains and losses, ups and downs, joys and sorrows. My journey has brought me up front and in the arena with my pain, anger, doubt, and sadness. And it has been a journey, deconstructing old beliefs, only to build something far greater than what I could have previously imagined. To read more, click here.

The Master Key
By Robert Peng, a featured speaker in The Shift Network’s 2019 Qigong Global Summit

It's 1972 in the industrial city of Xiangtan, China. A frail child with a heart condition sneaks into a hotel boiler room and befriends the elderly yet vibrant attendant, who eventually reveals his true identity as a revered Qigong master. He heals the boy and, for the next 13 years, secretly teaches him the keys to unlocking the spiritual and healing dimensions of the Life Force.

It sounds like a modern-day fable, but the story is true. And with The Master Key, that grateful student, Robert Peng, invites all of us to enter the next chapter of this empowering path. Here, Master Peng brings together the unique insights of his teacher with the moving account of his own journey.

Lee Holden's Story
Qigong Teacher and Shift Network faculty

EXCERPT: Way back in the day I had a low back injury. I was playing competitive soccer. I was tackled by a competitive and rival team and I landed on my tailbone, and I was in so much pain, I didn't know what to do with myself. I'd never experienced pain like that. I had seen the team doctors, I had taken cortisone shots, a physical therapist didn't know what to do with me. I was out for the season, so I was really depressed.

Lee’s new 7-week live video training, Qigong to Supercharge Your Immune System: Discover Ancient Practices to Clear Stress, Build Ironclad Immunity & Protect Your Health & Wellbeing, begins Thursday, May 21. For more details, click here.

Nick Mattos' Story
Shift Network’s Faculty Recruitment and Engagement Manager

EXCERPT: When the first of the two lineages fell, there was a certain way in which I was able to excuse it for the fact that I had the other one to lean on. Basically, that I was able to bypass the real engagement with what it meant — that I was part of a lineage in which this abuse occurred — by saying that at least I had this other one that was pure. When that one was proven to be unpure as well. It was stunning.

A Letter from Sri Lanka: Releasing Resistance, Taking in the Good
By Kaira Jewel Lingo, co-host of the Mindfulness and Meditation Summit

Personally the need to stay at home has been all right as I already worked from home before and the curfew coincided with recovering from a minor surgery, so the calm and stillness was very conducive to healing. What has been hard however is that my partner and I are splitting up and the relationship I moved to Sri Lanka for has come to an end after two years.

We have been living under curfew together in our second apartment in Anuradhapura for several weeks unable to split up physically. We still can’t return to Colombo and begin the process of moving to different apartments until curfew is lifted there. So we are continuing to share space and take care of each other and our common life as friends.

Awakening to the Apocalypse
By Dr. Larry Ward, a featured speaker in the Mindfulness and Meditation Summit

I was meditating recently on what we face at this moment in our lives, in our work, and in our practice, and, surprisingly, some images from the New Testament came to my mind. I found the language in the Book of Revelations to be quite illuminating: the apocalypse. The word refers to the end of things, but as we know from our Buddhist practice, the end is always simultaneously the beginning of things. To read more, click here.

Reach Down and Touch the Earth
By Pamela Weiss, a featured speaker in the Mindfulness and Meditation Summit

Early written accounts of the Buddha’s teaching are rife with distrust and disgust toward sexuality, desire, and women’s bodies. These teachings consistently depict women as only obstacles to male ambition. Women’s stories and perspectives are markedly absent, flitting around the edges like shadows… Untangling the history of misogyny from Buddhism asks us to consider how modern-day Buddhist institutions continue to preference men, overlook the experiences of women (and those who are transgender or gender fluid), and disregard feminine qualities. To recount the historical and mythic stories of women surrounding the Buddha is an act of reparation, stitching the parts left out back into the fabric of spiritual life. We’re Still Living and Dying in the Slaveholders’ Republic
By Ibram X. Kendi
Published in The Atlantic

There is a war between those fighting to open America back up for the sake of individual freedom, and those fighting to keep America closed for the sake of community freedom. A civil war over the very meaning, the very utility of freedom.

From the beginning of the American project, the powerful individual has been battling for his constitutional freedom to harm, and the vulnerable community has been battling for its constitutional freedom from harm. Both freedoms were inscribed into the U.S. Constitution, into the American psyche. The history of the United States, the history of Americans, is the history of reconciling the unreconcilable: individual freedom and community freedom.

Ayni for Changemakers
Video

A message from Shift Network faculty don Oscar Miro-Quesada: I was intimately involved in the production of this video and feel its simple message is even more timely given the evolutionary changes demanded of humankind at present.

As the founder of The Heart Of The Healer (THOTH) Alliance — having been born, raised, and undergone countless moons of traditional shamanic apprenticeship in Peru — I’ve ensured that our organizational ethos and service vision are intimately aligned and take guidance from ancestral Andean wisdom precepts.

Of the many soul sympathetic and reverence summoning tenets adhered to by Heart Island’s (South America) Quechua-speaking Indigenous populations, the principle of Ayni, or “sacred reciprocity,” reigns supreme. In essence, Ayni is experienced as a dynamic process of cosmic equilibrium — an exquisitely balanced relationship between what is received and what is given. Since it governs all human-mediated material and spiritual forms of exchange, it plays a crucial role in the revitalization of sacred trust between humankind and the natural world.

Detox Your Heart
By Valerie Mason-John, a featured speaker in the Mindfulness & Meditation Summit

Drawing on her own experiences with abuse and addiction, Valerie Mason-John presents a well-grounded series of meditations that transform anger, hatred, and fear to heal emotional trauma. She knows what it is like to be filled with toxic emotions — and how to release them. After years of abuse and struggles with addiction, she was mired in anger, resentment, and fear. But through meditation and willingness to forge a new path, she learned how to disarm such toxins and find peace.

In Detox Your Heart, Mason-John helps us recognize our emotions, good and bad, and to develop the self-care to heal ourselves. Chapters that explore and clearly define negative emotions are paired with chapters on how to transform them. Meditation exercises based on the Buddhist principles of mindfulness, loving-kindness, and compassion provide tools to help us heal our own hurts and close the gap that toxic emotions create between heart and mind.

Shervin Boloorian

Natural living sound inspires musician, sound therapist, and recording artist Shervin Boloorian’s new 12-track album, “I Hear You, Mother Earth,” which contains a timely message of coming home to music as medicine from our natural world. Click here to watch the 5-minute promo video.

“I Hear You, Mother Earth” contains 66 minutes of “medicine” songs. These songs feature acoustic instruments used for sound healing from every corner of the globe, almost all of which are presented by Shervin.

Traditional Bali-style voice and instruments are shared from Bali presenter Gede Artha (Partha), on four of the album’s 12 tracks, with Shervin bringing his smooth, delicate, and often mesmerizing vocals to six tracks while singing in five different languages.

Listeners familiar with Shervin’s signature Sound Medicine journeys will recognize this album as a supercharged studio version of those improvised natural sound and live music presentations, with four instrumental tracks also contained.

The album is more than a medicine music collection, however. It also contains nature recordings and pays homage to Balinese ceremonial chants and sounds. Balinese culture professes respect for nature. An underlying philosophy of “Tri-Hita Kerana” (harmony with nature, harmony with humanity, and harmony with the unseen divine world) beautifully ties in with the album’s theme.
