The Shift Catalyst — Ancestral Healing Summit

By Lisa Bonnice, award-winning author and program host at The Shift Network

Hi. I'm Lisa Bonnice, your host for The Shift Network's first-ever Ancestral Healing Summit, a free online event from April 8–12 The topic of ancestral healing is so expansive and diverse that it takes a whole five days with over three dozen expert speakers to even begin the discussion — and we’re still only scratching the surface.

We’ll be talking about the hard science of epigenetics, which tells how our ancestors’ experiences affected their DNA, which then got passed down to us in the form of illnesses, phobias, unhealthy social behavior patterns, anxiety, depression, and PTSD. You’ll be able to watch my video interviews with some of the top experts in the field, like Drs. Dan Siegel and Sue Morter, Dawson Church, and Gregg Braden.

We’ll look at the psychological aspects of how our ancestors affect us, how past lives enter into the equation, and we’ll explore ancestral healing from a shamanic perspective, with many shamanists like Sandra Ingerman, Hank Wesselman, don Oscar Miro-Quesada, and, of course, Daniel Foor — a renowned expert in ancestral healing work. They, and many others, offer powerful insights into how you can explore communication with your ancestors and work with them to create a more satisfying and healthy life for you, your family, and your descendants.

You can register for free here.

We’ll also be talking with Natalia O’Sullivan, a psychic medium who specializes in ancestral healing work, and Desda Zuckerman, an expert in working with the energy field in clearing up stuck ancestral patterns. We’ll even address how adoptees, who may have no idea who their ancestors are, can absolutely participate in this work.

And because ancestral history is something we all have in common, we adopted a global perspective and connected with experts with backgrounds in some of humankind’s most destructive historical events like the African diaspora, the Holocaust, the displacement of Indigenous peoples, Japanese internment camps, and the oppression of the LGBTQ community.

Each and every expert we talk with offers incredible insights and wisdom, and there are far too many to name here. Please take a look at the lineup and make a point of listening in to as many as you can. These illuminating conversations will change the way you look at your life, the lives of those who came before you, and those who are yet to come.

I do hope you'll join us for The Ancestral Healing Summit, a FREE online event from April 8–12. We’ll see you there!

In observation of Women’s History Month, here is a note from Stephen Dinan, President of The Shift Network:

This past week, I joined my wife and co-founder of The Shift Network, Devaa Haley Mitchell, as a delegate to the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (UNCSW) for Pathways to Peace, an NGO advancing a Culture of Peace.

More than 5,000 women, ranging from grassroots leaders to policymakers, gathered from around the world for the UN’s largest annual commission.

The schedule was packed with meetings from morning until evening, engaging with some of the hardest aspects of life faced by women around the world. The issues that were explored ranged from sex trafficking to domestic violence, from female genital mutilation to “gendercide” of 200M unborn females, from discrimination in media to the lack of legal rights for widows.

It was a sobering wake-up call about just how far we still have to go as a planet. Yet, it was an incredibly hopeful event that left us feeling a deep optimism that we can, and will, rise to the challenges we face.

Click here to watch Devaa offer more detailed commentary in a 4-minute video she posted from the event.

Editor’s Note: In this issue’s exclusive video interview, beloved Shift faculty Mirabai Starr shares the inside story on her brand-new book, Wild Mercy: Living the Fierce and Tender Wisdom of the Women Mystics. And in an audio interview, Shift summit speaker Barbara Winter offers a roadmap for Becoming an Idea Detective.

Finally, we’d love to hear your answer to the question, Which woman in history has inspired you the most and why?To share your thoughts in our Facebook Page community, click here.

Three major feminist principles: that violence cannot solve problems, that cooperation is more supportive and life-enhancing than competition, and that life, including the quality of life of all living things, is the foremost consideration in making decisions.

We'll even address how adoptees who may have no idea who their ancestors are can absolutely participate in this work. Please, God, Can’t I Keep My Baby?
By Echo Bodine

In 1968, it was pretty shameful to be 19 and an unwed mother. So I went off to California and told everybody I had transferred to a different college. All throughout the pregnancy, whenever I would rebel and think, I’m going to keep this baby, my intuition kept saying, No, you’re not. And I would get the word adoption every time. Even though I had made arrangements with an adoption agency, in the back of my mind I kept thinking that when it came right down to it, I was going to take my baby home with me. Sometimes, out of desperation, I thought, Maybe the day my son is born, my intuition will tell me, Okay, now you can keep him.

Mirabai Starr on Wild Mercy
Video interview with Phil Bolsta

In this 43-minute video interview exclusively for Catalyst, beloved Shift faculty Mirabai Starr shares her thoughts on and experiences with her brand-new book, Wild Mercy: Living the Fierce and Tender Wisdom of the Women Mystics.

An excerpt:

Well, one of the women that I'm really happy to be introducing to the world in a fuller way — I've written about her before but not as much as I would have liked until now — is my namesake, Mirabai, the 16th-century Bhakti poet from India. Bhakti means devotion, right? Mirabai was an ecstatic poet devoted to Lord Krishna, the God of love. Her poetry is very much like the poetry of Rumi or Hafez or some of the Sufi poets that we know of. It was ecstatic; it was drenched in metaphor, very much embodied in the human experience and the experience of nature.

Barbara J. Winter on Becoming an Idea Detective
Video interview with Phil Bolsta

In this 35-minute audio interview exclusively for Catalyst, Barbara Winter, author of the classic bestseller, Making a Living Without a Job, shares her thoughts on why the two most frequent complaints she hears in her seminar, “Becoming an Idea Detective,” are "I have too many ideas" and "I have no ideas" — and why both positions produce the same result.

An excerpt:

This is what I hear when people call me on the phone, Phil. And they'll say, "I have an idea. I want you to tell me if it's really dumb." And I always say, "I haven't heard a dumb idea yet. So if yours is, it'll be the first one that I've heard that was dumb." And I often hear people kind of apologize, and they'll say, "Well, it's just an idea." What does that mean, "just an idea"? Everything we see around us was first an idea... and at the same time, if we say, "Oh it's just an idea," it’s like it doesn't really matter much.

And so dismissing things really quickly also is just death to our ideas. So it's understanding that when we have an idea, whether it seems wildly original or just like a really pleasant way to make some little aspect of our own lives or other peoples' lives better, we need to pay attention and take action, that alters our relationship with it altogether.

Why Spiritual Practice is Essential in Crazy Times
By Philip Goldberg
Originally published on Spirituality & Health

Recently, someone told me she was so riled up about our current political climate that she can’t meditate. She’d grown increasingly irritated, angry, and despondent, and now, after the unspeakable violence in Pittsburgh, the pipe bombs that mercifully failed to go off, and the daily vitriol of the midterm election campaign, she says she is so agitated that she can’t settle down, and she feels so compelled to hear the latest news that she won’t take the time for a valued practice she’d been doing for more than twenty years. “I can’t turn within with so much going on and so much at stake,” she said. My response was, “You have it backwards. At times like this, you want to meditate more, not less.”

The Inner Activist
By Kelly Ford

There’s a beautiful gift contained within our personal reaction to an external event. Processing and healing our own reaction first helps create inner alignment and balance, affording us the opportunity to see things more clearly. You have to get clear within, before you’ll see clearly without! The resulting experience can be one of profound peace, understanding, compassion and a sense of authentic personal and universal power.

Coaches and Holistic Practitioners: Is Your Current Service-Delivery Model Setting You Up for Failure?
By Jesse Koren and Sharla Jacobs

Can you imagine being in a relationship where every week brings another discussion about whether you should stay together? Sounds exhausting. Yet, that’s the traditional private practice model that most Coaches and Holistic Practitioners are taught to create.

The Traditional Private Practice Model is Broken
The biggest problem with the Traditional Private Practice Model is that you’re counting on your clients/patients to recommit to their healing and transformation every single time they have a session with you. It’s exhausting for everyone to have to reconsider their commitment over and over again each week.

Thank You for Helping the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota Recover from Storm Damage

In our December 2, 2018 issue, we invited you to support the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota after storms and tornadoes whipped through the Oglala community. More than 450 homes were severely damaged by this natural disaster. FEMA had denied the Oglala Sioux Tribe Emergency Disaster Funds, leaving hundreds of families facing the winter months with broken windows and holes in their walls and ceilings.

We wanted to share this positive update we received:

Hello everyone! This is Jackie with Sacred Healing Circle. I wanted to reach out to you and provide an update on the work we have been able to complete in Pine Ridge, made possible by your help in getting the word out. So first, thank you! The support that flooded in after teaming with you all was so beautiful to see. We surpassed the goal set on our crowdfunding campaign by almost double!

We have repaired over 100 windows, doors, and walls, distributed physical donations of gloves, thermal wear, children’s and adult winter coats and shoes, warm socks, hats, and scarves to multiple families in need, and have begun to build a local team of community members who are skilled in doing the repairs that have been needed. It’s been a great start to addressing the needs of the People and we thank you very much for being such a big part of this success!

Factfulness: Ten Reasons We're Wrong About the World — and Why Things Are Better Than You Think
By Hans Rosling, Anna Rosling Rönnlund, and Ola Rosling

Factfulness is the stress-reducing habit of only carrying opinions for which you have strong supporting facts. When asked simple questions about global trends, we systematically get the answers wrong. So wrong that a chimpanzee choosing answers at random will consistently outguess teachers, journalists, Nobel laureates, and investment bankers. In Factfulness, Professor of International Health and global TED Talk phenomenon Hans Rosling, together with his two long-time collaborators, Anna and Ola, offers a radical new explanation of why this happens. Click here to watch a short video by the authors. Click here to order your copy.

Factfulness by Hans Rosling, an outstanding international public health expert, is a hopeful book about the potential for human progress when we work off facts rather than our inherent biases.

The Pad Project

Too many girls in developing countries cannot afford or access sanitary pads, which means that when they get their period, they have to turn to unhealthy alternatives like dirty rags, leaves, or ashes. On top of their high risk of infection every time their period comes, they also have to miss school--and the more school they miss, the more likely it becomes that they will fall too far behind and have to drop out entirely.

But there is a new invention that solves this problem. A man named Muruganantham created a machine that makes affordable, biodegradable pads from locally sourced materials. Better still, the machine does more than just supply girls with pads: it supplies a steady income to the women in the area who want to work on it. In other words, this machine helps both girls and women gain independence.

Trevor Hall

Raised on an island in South Carolina, singer/songwriter Trevor Hall realized at a young age that music was more than just a passion — it was, rather, his life’s art. At 16, he recorded his first album, and soon after he left South Carolina for Idyllwild Arts Academy in California where he studied classical guitar and was introduced to the practices of yoga and meditation, which would greatly influence his life and his music.

Trevor’s music, a blend of roots and folk music, is imbued with a deep love of Eastern mysticism. This powerful symbiosis fostered a deep connectivity with his growing fan base and Trevor quickly matured into a leader of the burgeoning conscious musical community.

His previous full-length album releases, Chapter of the Forest (2014) and KALA (2015), debuted at #3 and #2 on the iTunes singer/ songwriter chart respectively and were supported by extensive tours around the U.S. and Australia. Beyond his intention to spread love and healing through music, Trevor also collects donations to support children’s education in India and has continuously donated to charities and relief funds.

The Fruitful Darkness is Trevor’s first independent release — supported by his fans known as THE VILLAGERS — after a decade-plus recording for established labels. “There have been many hurdles and triumphs along the way” he reflects. “This album conveys the deep vulnerability of journeying through the unknown, as opposed to playing it safe.” Besides the change in infrastructure, the album itself explores completely new sonic terrain and is being released unconventionally, in 3-5 song installments on specific lunar dates.
