By Brian Siddhartha Ingle, ND, DO, and Gayatri Schriefer, hosts of the Somatic Movement Summit

Remember how you moved as a child without any aches and pains, and it felt like you didn’t have a body, and you were just free in your movements?

At some point, you started to feel life’s responsibilities pile up. And when you grew up, you started to carry the weight of life’s responsibilities on your shoulders.

Instead of being used as a means for you to experience the joy of movement, your body became a vehicle to carry your thinking mind around. Somehow, somewhere you became disconnected from the free joyful movement you experienced as a child.

Somatic practice is all about bringing us back to our natural state, as you’ll find out for yourself during the free Somatic Movement Summit that we’re privileged to host from April 27 - May 1.

You’ll discover that if we had continued to explore, like when we were children, we would not age in such a degenerative way. Instead, we would continue to flourish and learn by being embodied both physically and mentally. This creates a healthy maturation, keeping development alive as we sense and feel and not objectify the body.

Coming back to our natural way of moving enables us to be centered, grounded, pain-free, and happy. Our aliveness and freedom to move in the world enables us to actualize our dreams. Somatic practice builds resilience and helps us develop the skills to live a peaceful life.

I hope you’ll join us for the free 5-day Somatic Movement Summit beginning April 27. We video interviewed an array of international speakers, including Eleanor Criswell Hanna, EdD, Stephen Porges, PhD, Paul Linden, PhD, Martha Eddy, Sondra Fraleigh, Lavinia Plonka, Jeong Myung Gim, and Bernadette Pleasant.

You can register for this free summit here. Be prepared to discover the richness of moving and sensing from the inside!

The Shift Network continues our free Pandemic Programming, drawing from deep spiritual practices and insights to help you turn this time of shutting down into an opening up of new possibilities in your life. We feature seven live sessions a day and three from the archives, plus a special Community Zoom on Mondays and an Earth Day drumming circle this Wednesday. For the full roster of programming, click here.

EDITOR’S NOTE: “The Master Key” by Robert Peng, a featured speaker in The Shift Network’s Qigong Global Summit, is one of the most profoundly important books I’ve ever read. I can say that it’s life-changing with complete confidence, because it changed my life before I even finished reading it. I was so impressed with this book that we are serializing the section called “One Hundred Days of Darkness and Light” in future issues of Catalyst. You can read the twelfth installment (as well as the previous ones) here.
— Phil Bolsta

The uplifting stories in this issue’s “The Nicest Thing” section come from two speakers in the Somatic Movement Summit: Lavinia Plonka, a body language expert and teacher of the Feldenkrais Method®… and Suzanne Scurlock, a leading authority on conscious awareness.

You’ll also hear from Indigo Arco Iris, a Marketing Specialist on the Shift Community Transformation Team. Look for stories from other members of the Shift Team in future issues. We look forward to having you get to know us better!

Finally, we’d love to hear your answer to the question, Do you have a daily movement practice that helps you live with more ease and flexibility? To share your thoughts in our Facebook Page community, click here.

The human body is not an instrument to be used, but a realm of one’s being to be experienced, explored, enriched, and thereby educated.

The Global Opportunity and Blessings of Covid-19
By Michael Stone, host of Shift’s Shamanism Global Summit

Spring is here and with it an unprecedented opportunity, perhaps beyond any that has occurred since the birth of humanity. Today more than 7.5 billion people face a common, non-human threat in the form of the coronavirus. While there is fear, death, uncertainty, even panic, there is also beauty, kindness, and a compassionate birthing of an awakening human heart. One thing is clear, nothing will ever be the same again! Disproportionate racial impacts of Covid
First published on EmbraceRace.com

The Covid-19 crisis is hurting all our communities, but not equally. The data that would allow us to document the pandemic’s uneven toll rigorously are incomplete and only now emerging - and it’s already clear that communities of color, including children, once again are on the frontlines of vulnerability.

We’ve gathered — and are updating regularly — news links that begin to tell the story of the impact of Covid-19 on Black, Indigenous and People of Color and other racialized communities. These communities have been sounding the alarm about the vulnerabilities imposed on them by systemic bigotry and malign neglect for a very long time. Will our policy makers and all of us, collectively, hear and respond to the clarion call this time around?

How Dreaming Gets Us Through
By Robert Moss, Shift faculty

In our current closed-down society, people who did not previously make much room in their lives for dreams are dreaming up a storm. Unused to sharing or working with dreams, they often shout out, “Why am I having this weird dream?” As a lifelong dreamer who devotes much of his time to teaching others how to dream, let me offer a few general observations. The Freedom to Move, Freedom to Be: The Feldenkrais Method®
By Lavinia Plonka, a featured speaker in the Somatic Movement Summit

I was in my late 30s, at the height of my performing career, but my body felt like I was ready for the junk heap. My back hurt almost all the time. I was going to the chiropractor, massage therapist, and acupuncturist just to be able to keep getting on the stage. I was convinced that I had something terribly wrong with me. Once, I peeked at the chiropractor’s chart to see my diagnosis. It said “Lumbago.” Wow. Then I looked it up. Lumbago simply means lower back pain. That’s it? Nothing was really wrong with me? Then why the pain?

The Transformative Effects of Somatic Education in My Life
By Suresha Hill, EdS, HSE, DOMTP, a featured speaker in the Somatic Movement Summit

I was in peak condition in my twenties — worked out for hours at a time — and in college met a friend who changed my perspective on diet. Things began to develop into a spiritual path, which took me to India and a meditative, vegan life. After living in India for two years, my health took a nosedive into being in chronic pain, incredibly weak, and unable to digest a salad or anything beyond a bowl of soup.

The Master Key
By Robert Peng, a featured speaker in The Shift Network’s 2019 Qigong Global Summit

It's 1972 in the industrial city of Xiangtan, China. A frail child with a heart condition sneaks into a hotel boiler room and befriends the elderly yet vibrant attendant, who eventually reveals his true identity as a revered Qigong master. He heals the boy and, for the next 13 years, secretly teaches him the keys to unlocking the spiritual and healing dimensions of the Life Force.

It sounds like a modern-day fable, but the story is true. And with The Master Key, that grateful student, Robert Peng, invites all of us to enter the next chapter of this empowering path. Here, Master Peng brings together the unique insights of his teacher with the moving account of his own journey.

Suzanne Scurlock's Story
Leading authority on conscious awareness and a featured speaker in the Somatic Movement Summit

EXCERPT: I just went rushing into the gym. I came back out, got in the car, and I'm looking around for my deposit and I'm thinking, "There is no way that this deposit is actually going to show up again." Literally, it had hundreds of dollars of cash in it, I had, 20 checks, the deposit slip, and I just couldn't figure out... I knew I had locked the car; it didn't make any sense to me that it was gone. And then a woman comes running out of the gym waving my deposit slip. I said to her, "What happened?" She goes, “Mrs. Scurlock, Mrs. Scurlock, your deposit slip. A man just brought it into me. He said that he found it on the ground and he knew you must be absolutely desperate for it."

Lavinia Plonka's Story
Body language expert, teacher of the Feldenkrais Method®, and a featured speaker in the Somatic Movement Summit

EXCERPT: Her name is Dr. Terry Wulster and she did an examination, and she said, "Well, you're going to need several adjustments." I had no insurance and I couldn't even pay my mortgage at the time. I went, "How much is that going to cost me?" She said, "Well, the adjustments are $35 a session," and I fell apart. I just completely like weeping and sobbing about how I can never get it together and I don't have any money. She just went, "Well, don't pay me." And right in the middle of all my tears I just stopped cold, and I realized that, wow, when you get the right kind of shock, your emotions can change instantaneously. I was like, "What?"

Indigo Arco Iris' Story
Marketing Specialist for The Shift Network

EXCERPT: So I had to make a choice, doing all these quick calculations in my head... And the softest place to hit, it turns out, was the edge of this other car. So, I aimed at a specific spot on that car, so that when I hit the car — It was almost like playing pool too — like if I hit it right here I'm going to bounce over here and I won't bounce against the wall, I won't bounce into the river. So I did that. We hit, and as we hit, I remember this very spiritual moment where I started hearing some kind of benevolent beings talk to me...

Moving Beyond the Crush of Self-Doubt
By Marcela Widrig, a featured speaker in the Somatic Movement Summit

This past week I was flooded with self-doubt. It left me incapacitated in a way I hadn’t felt in years. All my old mind games came rushing in both to tell me truly soul-crushing things and that I had to figure my way out, now! The result was a wild spin out that I’m just now recovering from. I finally found the courage to face the monsters I am always sure are hidden under that bed, deep in the unknown. Here are 3 things I did, which I demonstrate in a video, and which I’m sure you can do too, if and when you get caught in the unrelenting claws of self-doubt. Pandemic World: How My Communal Past Helps Me Cope
By Jan Mundo, CMSC, CMT
First published in HoneySuckle magazine

I wondered why some people seemed to get it, while others seemed oblivious to everyone but themselves or didn’t want to be bothered? Weren’t community-minded, common-sense measures obvious to everyone? It dawned on me that my world view had been shaped by a half-century of exploring nature and eastern, mystical, and spiritual traditions and healing arts — and by the years I lived on a commune. Why You Should Ignore All That Coronavirus-Inspired Productivity Pressure
By Dr. Aisha S. Ahmad
First published in The Chronicle of Higher Education

Among my academic colleagues and friends, I have observed a common response to the continuing Covid-19 crisis. They are fighting valiantly for a sense of normalcy — hustling to move courses online, maintaining strict writing schedules, creating Montessori schools at their kitchen tables. They hope to buckle down for a short stint until things get back to normal. I wish anyone who pursues that path the very best of luck and health.

Yet as someone who has experience with crises around the world, what I see behind this scramble for productivity is a perilous assumption. The answer to the question everyone is asking — "When will this be over?" — is simple and obvious, yet terribly hard to accept. The answer is never.

The Promise of Regenerative Healing: A Systems Change Perspective
By Shift faculty Dr. Shamini Jain

As the global human family finds ourselves squarely in the midst of the Covid-19 crisis, we’ve noticed how regenerative our Earth really is. Greenhouse gas emissions are plummeting and air quality has drastically improved, bringing blue skies to places like Los Angeles. Waterways like the Ganga (Ganges River), generally fraught with industrial pollution, are now clearing, with the water becoming drinkable.

This “Great Pause” as some have called it, is a time where we can reflect on how we wish to evolve the systems we humans have created, for a healthy, thriving life in right relationship with the Earth and with each other. There’s never been a better time for us to envision new possibilities for a regenerative, peaceful world — and begin to bring that world into fruition. To read more, click here.

Donate Your Corona Bucks!
Initiated by Bill McCart

The Federal government has begun sending checks of up to $1,200 to each adult taxpayer. We call them “Corona Bucks.” The money is intended to prop up a dangerously slumping economy and help offset the loss of income that many millions of Americans are experiencing from the coronavirus pandemic.

Are you fortunate enough to have escaped the worst financial impacts of the pandemic? Are some of your family, friends, co-workers and others around you much more affected than you? If so, then you are one of those we are appealing to! So we ask you to… Donate Your Corona Bucks!

Here are some ways you can donate your Corona Bucks to help people who are financially most affected by the pandemic:

Option 1: Give directly to those around you.
Option 2: Give to a local charity.
Option 3: Give to a national charity.
Or any combination of the three. It’s up to you!

Greg Breda
Visual artist

California native Greg Breda is a self-taught contemporary visual artist who lives and works in Los Angeles. Painting with acrylic paint on canvas, mylar, and paper, his work explores the strength, resilience, and beauty of the human spirit.

Sourcing media, memory, spiritual identity, and his imagination, Greg constructs a realistic central theme against minimal and abstracted backgrounds, persuading the viewer that the compelling conditions surrounding us could merely be challenging illusions. Often referencing ancient text, nature, and the language of flowers, the work then steps forward into reality (realism) in order to convey a level of clarity that is attainable through an illuminated spirit.

Through his work, Greg seeks to encourage the viewer to envision being elevated, illuminated, and expansive. Click here to visit Greg’s website.
